Global honour for Malala

ISLAMABAD: Malala Yousafzai, who was shot at last year by the militants for advocating education of girls, has been selected for the Global Leadership Award this year. The 15-year-old  will receive the award for her role as a global activist in advocating for educating and empowering girls worldwide, a media announcement said on Monday. She was targeted for her outspoken views and advocacy on behalf of girls’ education. Last year,  UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared November 10 as Malala Day. He had also referred to her as a ‘daughter of the United Nations.’ Malala will receive the Champion for Global Change Award in Washington on November 6 at an event hosted by the UN Foundation and benefits UN Foundation and the United Nations Association of the USA’s Global Classrooms Model UN programme.

Blast rocks Ghazni City  

Kabul: A heavy explosion rocked Ghazni City in eastern Afghanistan yesterday morning. Afghan Deputy Provincial Governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi confirming the report said the incident took place in a bus station, according to Khaama Press. Officials in state hospital said at least six people killed or injured following the blast have been taken to the hospital and the health condition of a number of individuals injured are critical. According to reports the incident took place after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in the bus stop, however local officials are saying it is yet not clear if it was a suicide attack. No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident. 

4 rebels killed, 7 detained  

Kabul: Four militants were killed and seven  detained in joint operations by Afghan forces and Nato-led coalition troops in the past 48 hours across Afghanistan. Operations took place in Helmand, Paktia and Wardak provinces. Weapons were seized during raids, an ISAF statement said. It did not provide details of casualties among the security forces.
