Doha: Customers will not have to pay excessive price to porters for carrying sheep to a slaughter house and back this Ramadan.
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce yesterday announced new initiatives to regulate porters and maintain order in slaughter houses.
As per the ministry, Widam (Qatar Meat and Livestock Company) has added 100 butchers to its slaughter houses and will provide 150 porters who will carry the sheep for customers.
Customers will be required to pay QR34 to porters.
The initiative is taken to control illegal porters who demand more money during Ramadan.
Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Kaabi, Managing Director, Widam, said the company has signed an agreement with a specialised security company to provide security personnels to regulate entry and exit at slaughter houses during Ramadan.
Sheikh Jassim bin Jabor bin Hassan Al Thani, Director,  Consumer Protection Department, told a  press conference that the department had agreed with municipalities to distribute the list of 400 products under price control during Ramadan to all outlets in the country. It will be displayed in all shops.
He said there had been a few violations of the list in the past and sometimes they happen by mistake and are not intentional.
He said inflation has come down during Ramadan due to price control.
He said the ministry allocated QR12m for meat and sheep subsidies. It has also introduced a new buying mechanism under which Qataris are allowed to purchase two sheep a season using their ID cards.
Syrian sheep is priced at QR950, and Jordanian one at QR800.
Al Kaabi said the company will provide cleaners for slaughter houses to maintain hygiene.
He said the company is also keen to comply with WHO recommendations regarding corona virus (MERS) and provide masks to customers visiting slaughter houses.
He said recently the company had received 55,000 sheep and cows to meet demand during Ramadan.
Earlier, the Consumer Protection Department met heads of monitoring sections of Doha, Al Wakra, Umm Salal, Al Shamal, Al Khor and Al Zakhira municipalities.
It discussed joint efforts by authorities concerned to implement Ramadan initiatives.
Sheikh Jassim bin Jabor, and Supervisor of Consumer Protection, Abdullah Khalifa Al Kuwari, attended.
The meeting agreed on joint procedures to publish and distribute discount price lists for food and no-food items for Ramadan to all outlets and commercial centres.
It was also agreed that employees of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning and the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, armed with judicial powers, will monitor all outlets to ensure they are complying with the discounted lists of commodities and have displayed it.
They also agreed to follow up on the initiative for providing subsidised meat (Arabian sheep), which takes effect on June 25.
They will also coordinate to curb commercial frauds during Ramadan when demand for various commodities rises.
