DOHA: Garangao, a festival for children on the 14th day of Ramadan in the region, will be celebrated today.

In the evening, children, in traditional clothes, will come out of their homes and knock on every door in their neighbourhoods, which will be ready to receive them with sweets and nuts. They will collect goodies in special cotton bags, hanging loosely from their necks. Several organisations are also organising Garangao.

UDC

As part of its cultural activities, and in line with the spirit of solidarity during Ramadan, United Development Company (UDC) will hold Garangao from 8.30pm to 11.30pm in Porto Arabia, 18 La Croisette, at The Pearl–Qatar.

In The Pearl–Qatar, children will roam throughout the island, adorned in colourful traditional costumes, chanting traditional songs, amid vineyard gifts distributed by adults.

Ibq

The International Bank of Qatar (ibq) sponsored festivities for kids at paediatric wards at Hamad General Hospital and Al Rumailah Hospital.

The celebration fostered an atmosphere of fun and joy in line with the bank’s annual ‘Do Good Deeds’ campaign during Ramadan. The kids were entertained with games, handicraft activities, face painting, music and a balloon twisting clown.

Children also danced with famous cartoon characters such as Umm Khammas, Umm Allawi, Mickey Mouse and Barney who distributed gifts. Managing Director of ibq, Jabra Ghandour, said: “The month of Ramadan brings about the feelings of affinity and solidarity towards each other. This is exactly what we try to strengthen through ibq-sponsored activities and initiatives that create a smile on the face of children. We’re happy to have made these children happy in a celebration that means a lot to them and which they look forward to year on year.”

Nakilat

Nakilat, celebrated Garangao by inviting employees and their families for an evening of gift-giving and traditional food, songs and games. Managing Director, Muhammad Ghannam, said: “We are happy to be sharing this traditional festival with our employees and their families — local and international. Garangao is an excellent occasion for reinforcing Qatari traditions and promoting a sense of community among our employees.” The Peninsula
