Manila: A 5.1-magnitude earthquake has jolted an eastern Philippine province, more than one month after a tremor killed three people in the same area.

No damage or casualties were immediately reported after the quake, local officials said.

The quake's epicentre was located north-east of the town of Albuera in Leyte province, 578 kilometres south of Manila, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Local officials cancelled school classes and ordered engineers to check on buildings in Ormoc City and Albuera amid warnings that aftershocks were expected.
