DOHA: In a rare occasion, 25 classical music students in Qatar would get an opportunity to meet legendry south Indian singer Padmashree Dr K J Yesudas and listen to his concert for free.

Selected students studying vocal Carnatic music, a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, will be able to listen to ‘Yesudas @ Doha’ a classical concert on October 11 at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

Interested students should submit a letter from the music institute they are studying at to Marzook Al Salman and Sons, the organisers of ‘Yesudas @ Doha’.

“Twenty-five children will be allowed to listen to Dr Yesudas for free and if he agrees they would be able to get his blessings as well,” Mohammed Al Shamlan, Managing Director, Marzook Al Salman and Sons, told a press conference, attended by Yesudas,  at the Radisson Blu yesterday.

Stressing the importance of learning classical music for people who wish to build a career in music, Yesudas said: “Learn classical music properly as a basic.”

Yesudas sings Indian classical, devotional and popular music.

Yesudas has recorded more than 50,000 songs in many languages. His concert will be a repertoire of famous Indian classical tunes. Entry ticket was officially launched yesterday by Yesudas and the CEO of Doha Bank, R Seetharaman. The concert is expected to attract around 2,000 people from Tamil and Malayalam communities in the country.
