DOHA: The government is undertaking a number of complex mega projects said H E Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada, the Minister of Energy and Industry, yesterday speaking at the SPE Middle East Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainable Development Conference & Exhibition (MEHSE).
“We, in the State of Qatar, are very much aware of the challenges we have to meet as we manage the rapid growth of not just our industry, but also our national economy. We are undertaking a number of complex mega projects as well as an important redevelopment of the existing Bul Hanine, Dukhan, and Al Shaheen oil fields,” he said. “Such projects place the energy sector at the heart of our country’s development, and direct its potential towards achieving our National Vision and Development Strategy, which are guided by the vision and leadership of H H the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani,” he said.
The seventh edition of the MEHSE has attracted more than 600 attendees from 121 companies. Supported by Qatar Petroleum as host organisation, and organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the event is the largest society-led, oil and gas HSE event in the Middle East, and the first of its kind to include sustainable development as one of the core discussion topics. “Our industry is taking the search for new hydrocarbons into more intricate areas, hence creating an unprecedented need for higher levels of planning and performance. There is no doubt that our success is contingent upon our ability to integrate technological advances with safety, risk management, and environmental protection,” he said.
Saif Al Naimi, Conference Chairman and Director, HSE Regulations and Enforcement, Qatar Petroleum, said “With each new edition, we attempt to create an even better and stronger programme to build on this event’s solid reputation and offer a variety of exclusive topical sessions”.
Jeff Spath, 2014 SPE President, said: “SPE encourages the responsible management of these oil and gas resources and operations including the appropriate management of social and environmental impacts and their related risks.
