DOHA: A total of 328 students on the Honour Roll of Qatar University (QU) Vice-President and Chief Academic Officer were celebrated at male and female ceremonies.
Some 265 female and 63 male students in QU colleges were honoured for achieving GPA 3.5 and above for the fall and spring semesters in the academic year 2013-14.
Vice-President and Chief Academic Officer Dr Mazen Hasna presented certificates to them in the presence of parents, members of QU leadership, deans, heads of departments and faculty.
The events also included students’ meet-and-greet with Abdul Aziz Al Mahmoud, Qatari writer and Guest of Honour, who signed copies of his books, including his new novel The Holy Sail.
Dr Hasna said, “It is a great honour to celebrate our students for their achievements, hard work and dedication.
“The events highlight QU’s commitment to maximise its students’ potential and give them the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge to become future leaders and contribute to Qatar’s development.”
Al Mahmoud expressed pride over their distinction which, he said, allows them to accomplish their goals and aspirations and contribute to building Qatar’s knowledge-based economy.
“If we do not make our history, somebody else will make it for us.” He also briefed them on The Holy Sail, a fictional story which chronicles the medieval world of Lisbon, Cairo, Jeddah and Istanbul.
It uses historical research methods while engaging readers in a tale of love and honour.
Al Mahmoud highlighted the importance of reading which, he said, will help contribute to Qatar’s cultural development.
