Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli SC registered a stunning 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) but failed to get past the knock-out stage of the Al Kass Cup International U-17 at Aspire Zone yesterday.
In the second match, Aspire Academy defeated PSV Eindhoven 1-0 to top Group A. Both the teams already qualified for the quarter-finals.
Nasser Abdulsalam Alahrak scored the match winner for the Qatari side.
Meanwhile, the Saudi giants having suffered a 6-1 drubbing against Real Madrid in the first match in Group D, recovered in quick time in the second match to get full points against the Parisians, but the win was not enough to take them to the next stage.
Spanish giants Real Madrid and PSG qualified from Group D on account of a better goal difference.
All the three teams in the group finished with three points apiece from two matches.
Real Madrid which started the event with a resounding win over Al Ahli in the first match, endured defeat against PSG after conceding a last- minute goal and finished with one win from two matches.
For the Spanish giants, the 6-1 win over Al Ahli helped them advance while PSG also pipped Al Ahli on a superior goal tally.
Yesterday, Al Ahli meant business from the kick off taking the lead in the very second minute.
Ahmad Albassas found the net for Al Ahli beating the rival keeper with an elegant drive from the edge of the box.
Watched by Nicolas Sebastien Anelka, former France star, PSG bounced back to draw level with Timothy Tarpeh Weah tapping home a loose ball at the far post in the 21st minute.
The teams went into the half times break at one-all.
Al Ahli kept pressing for the match winner and were rewarded for their consistent forays into the rival area with a quarter left in the match.
Al Ahli’s Haitham Asiri latched on to a defensive lapse to put his team ahead.
Thereafter PSG tried its best to draw level but without any success.
On Monday, Red Bull Salzburg broke down the stubborn resistance of Kashiwa Reysol to record a narrow 1-0 victory to reach the quarter-finals along with Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol.
The knock out stage qualifiers begins on January 26, while today teams which did not make it past the group stage will fight for positions 9 to 12.
The semi-finals will be played on January 29 while the final will be held on January 31.
