Al Sadd players acknowledge fans after their win over Al Wakrah.
Doha, Qatar: Al Sadd have opened a four-point lead in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) following a strong run of results, but forward Rafa Mujica insists the defending champions are staying grounded as the season enters a crucial phase.
After a difficult start to their title defence, Al Sadd have responded in emphatic fashion, with Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Al Wakrah marking their ninth consecutive league win.
The Roberto Mancini-coached side began the second half of the season five points adrift of Al Gharafa but have since surged to the summit. They now lead by four points over both Al Gharafa and Al Shamal, who are tied on 31 points.
It was another commanding performance against Al Wakrah, with Pedro Miguel, Roberto Firmino and Mujica on target for the league leaders.
“It was an important match and getting three more points in our campaign is amazing,” said Mujica.
“We have built a four points lead but we are not dwelling on that. All the remaining matches are important and we will stay focused to maintain our momentum which is our main target.”
Al Sadd next face arch-rivals Al Duhail in an away match on Thursday at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. The Red Knights have struggled this season, languishing in eighth place with 21 points, but Mujica expects a stern challenge.
“It is going to be a tough match but we will aim for a win and will go all out for it.”
Meanwhile, Al Rayyan defender Ahmed Albakheet Al-Minhali said his side will look to build on their comeback victory over Al Ahli on Sunday.
The Lions fought back after Erik Exposito’s first-half strike for Al Ahli, with goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Rodrigo sealing victory for Al Rayyan.
They consolidated fourth place with 28 points - four ahead of Qatar SC and Al Arabi and three behind Al Shamal and Al Gharafa.
“We’ll try to get closer and closer to the top teams, and little by little, we promise our fans that we’ll bring them one or two championships, Insha Allah,” Al-Minhali said.
Al Rayyan face Al Gharafa on Thursday at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium. Apart from domestic competitions, including the prestigious Amir Cup, Al Rayyan are also competing in the Gulf Club Champions League.
