DOHA: Experts and academics from a number of countries are attending the sixth annual international translation conference which began at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) yesterday.
The two-day conference entitled “Translating the Gulf: Beyond Fault Lines” was opened by Dr Amal Al Malki, Executive Director of Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII).
The Gulf, with its economic and Geo-political importance has attracted talents from around the globe, with different cultural identities, said Al Malki in her opening speech.
Talking about the history of translation in the Arab world and its past golden age and the efforts by the institute to restore the glorious era for translation and its social, political, economical and cultural role in the Arab world, Dr Amal emphasized that “in the 21st century the State of Qatar strives to revive the Arab Islamic glorious past in translation through the TII”.
The TII “has made a good progress in delivering its goals” since its establishment in 2012, she added. Dr Naif Al Mutawa, founder and CEO of Teshkeel Media Group was the keynote speaker at the opening session. He shed light on “The 99” which is the first group of comic superheroes born of an Islamic archetype and he talked about the difficulties he faced due to the creation of this comic group and accusations made against him by religious figures in the Arab world.the peninsula
