YANGON, Myanmar: A Myanmar man was arrested on Sunday for beating his one-month-old baby son to death after a fight with his wife over her use of Facebook, according to police.

The suspect Nay Lin Htet was a resident of North Okalapa Township in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city.

Police officer Tin Tun Aung told Anadolu Agency the man used to repeatedly accuse his wife of neglecting their son by using Facebook on her phone all the time ever since the baby was born last month.

“The incident happened after their fight over use of social media,” Tin Tun Aung said by phone. “He then beat the baby when he lost his mind.”

Police arrested the 23-year-old suspect on Sunday after his wife reported their son’s death to authorities.

Mobile phone users in Myanmar -- a country that had been under a repressive military junta for nearly six decades -- have rapidly increased following the reform process started in 2011.

According to recent data released by GSMA Intelligence, Myanmar has over 37.5 million mobile phone connections.
