The Holy Quran says: “Truly Allah guides not one who transgresses and lies.” (40:28)
Why do we lie? And why is it hard to tell the truth?
Yes, we Muslims should generally be truthful with each other as our religion forbids us to lie, but why do people do it?
This is the question that crosses my mind. Doesn’t the truth serve our purpose and keep us out of trouble; doesn’t it give us peace? Do we tell lies to avoid responsibility and stay out of trouble, or avoid shame or embarrassment?
Some lie to gain favour in the eyes of others, but does that last? Don’t they realise that time will show what kind of person they truly are?
Some lies are told to gain love and wealth, and some people damage other people’s reputation and spread harmful untruths about other people to get what they want.
Do they gain happiness when they get what they want, or do they feel still empty inside and search for more lies to fulfil their needs?
Who wants to be a compulsive or pathological liar at the end and have no clear understanding of right and wrong when harming others with lies, or be one who lies to gain undeserved glory and esteem in the eyes of others?
Truth can set you free. Yes, it will. It will make you healthier and give you more freedom than you ever felt before. Peace within our selves, that’s what we need, just peace in which we feel that we don’t need to think or deceive or hurt anyone to fulfil our desires. Trust me, you just have to try it in order to believe it.
