DOHA: The proposed electronic salary transfer system whereby all workers in the country are to be paid via banks, exchange houses and other financial institutions, is in the final stages of approval.
This was disclosed here yesterday by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, H E Dr Abdullah bin Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi.
Called the Wage Protection System (WPS), it will guarantee that all employers pay their workers salaries in time via a foolproof electronic system.
The draft law is awaiting the final nod of the State Cabinet, which is expected soon, the minister said in remarks to Al Sharq on the sidelines of an event held at his ministry’s headquarters.
Relevant provisions of the labour law have been amended to put the WPS in force and these amendments are awaiting approval by the State Cabinet.
About amendments being made to other provisions of the labour law to help strengthen mechanisms to protect the rights of foreign workers, the minister said preparations were under way to issue those amendments as well.
The amendments are to be issued along with the amended sponsorship law, which also covers exit permit rules, said the minister.
“These amendments (to the sponsorship law) are being made by the Ministry of Interior,” the minister clarified. He, though, didn’t elaborate on the amendments being made to some provisions of the labour law.
Talking about the job nationalisation drive in the private sector, the minister said that a large number of companies had exceeded the 20 percent job reservation quota for nationals.
“We are looking forward to doubling employment opportunities for fellow citizens in the private sector in the near future.”
The minister was appreciative of the private sector and said it was highly responsive to the government’s call for providing increasing opportunities to nationals for jobs and training.
The event was Al Khaliji Commercial Bank’s open career day for Qataris.
“The private sector must play its role in implementing the state’s job nationalisation policy within the framework of the Qatar National Vision 2030,” Abdullah bin Saleh said.
According to him, a report on Qatarization has been prepared by his ministry and it has been welcomed by various government departments and agencies.
