DOHA - Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has recently launched a new welfare program called to support expatriate workers in Qatar, with funding from Chevron Phillips Chemical Company Qatar.

Under the slogan of 'Together for Benevolence', the program targets 23,000 expatriates in Qatar, particularly road, construction, and cleaning workers. It has three phases, namely: distribution of meals to 10,000 workers, distribution of water and juice bottles to 10,000 workers, and distribution of hygiene kits to 3,000 workers.

The target workers were selected from a number of major projects in Qatar, including workers of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy at Khalifa International Stadium and Aspire Zone, Qatar Rail, and the Old Heritage Town in Al-Wakra, as well as Al-Ahli Sports Club, Al-Thumama, Al-Khor, the Industrial Area, Al-Dafna, Msheireb, and QRC-surrounding constructions in Old Salata.

A team of 25-35 QRC volunteers work on the program, which has been 40 percent complete. The first phase began on Dec. 15, while the second and third phases are set to begin on the new year's day and mid-January respectively. It will conclude by the end of January.

"This program seeks to help the poor expatriate workers. We go to them at their workplaces to give them small gifts and say thank you for all that you do for constructing the modern edifices and buildings of the Qatari society," Najat Al-Haidous, head of QRC volunteers section, said, adding: "This is the first version of the program, and we hope to repeat and expand it in the near future."

She noted that cooperation with Chevron Phillips is not new, as it is one of the leading contributors to QRC's social projects. This, she added, reflects the company's trust in QRC's charitable and humanitarian mission, and its belief in the values of corporate social responsibility (CPR) and social partnership.
