DOHA: The Ministry of Interior is considering a proposal to build more housing units for its officials, including police personnel, as it is facing shortage of adequate number of accommodation facilities, according to a senior official of the ministry’s Housing Department.
“The ministry has a proposal to build barracks for police officials entitled for accommodations but are in the waiting for housing units,” a local Arabic daily quoted Captain Bander Farhan Ruwaili, Head, Housing Department, as saying in an interview with Al Shurta Ma’ak (police with you), magazine published by the ministry.
Captain Rwaili said there are several vacant plots near the ministry’s offices along Salwa Road and Al Shimaal Road which can be utilised for building homes for officials and police personnel working in these offices.
He said according to employees’ job contracts with the ministry, all police officials in grades 1 to 7 are entitled to furnished accommodations.
But there is a shortage of appropriate housing units, Captain Rwaili said.
He said currently there are nearly 300 senior officials on the waiting list for government accommodations.
Captain Rwaili said housing units will be allotted according to the size of the family (number of children) and not only according to grade and salaries.
He said the problem is because many occupants with a basic salary of QR30,000 and above and having one child are occupying whole villas, leaving big portions unutilised.
“This is not permissible because housing allowances are provided based on the total number of family members.
“The Housing Department is going through a crisis for housing units,” he added.
