JAMMU--PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Saturday admitted that “track-II” talks were in progress with BJP to form government in the state, which is currently under Governor’s rule.
“Our track-II talks are on with BJP and if these are successful, both sides will formulate a common minimum programme for the government to follow during next six years,” Mufti said. He said that “a structured dialogue” between the two parties will follow thereafter. “After that, we will make attempts to bring the state out of present morass,” he said.
Conscious of the fact that his party’s alliance with BJP may be exploited by political opponents, especially National Conference in the Valley, Mufti made it clear that he will not “sell out people’s verdict, but join hands with them for their welfare”. He also described the hung assembly verdict as an opportunity for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP to resolve the vexed Kashmir problem.
Holding jihadis responsible for the problems Kashmiris face elsewhere in the country, Mufti said, “I want to remove this slur brought by these militants/ terrorists to the people of Kashmir… For this, I do not need any government or the chief ministership.” In an apparent reference to BJP, he said, “If joining hands ensures welfare of the state and the country, I will do it.”
He also called for repeal of AFSPA in a time-bound manner in view of prevailing peace in J&K, transfer of various NHPC-owned hydel projects to the state, resumption of confidence building measures and jobs for educated unemployed youth of the state.
Sources said PDP has decided to contest two Rajya Sabha seats next month, leaving the other two for BJP.
