DOHA: Law-enforcement officials have recovered 63 forged credit cards from two Asians who bought valuables, including jewellery, expensive watches and smartphones using the cards.

Purchases were made with the help of some fellow citizens of the  duo, the Public Relations Department at the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the ministry launched an operation to catch the suspects after a complaint by a local bank about purchases made with forged credit cards bearing their names.

During investigation, police found the two had arrived here and been staying in a hotel and had bought precious items from several commercial centres. After collecting details, police obtained an arrest warrant and raided the hotel room and recovered 63 forged cards and items, including gold jewellery, expensive watches and iPhones.

During interrogation, the duo confessed that the cards were provided by a person in their country who asked them to travel to Qatar and buy precious items. He also promised 10 percent of the value of their  purchases as commission, the suspects claimed.

The duo were referred to the Public Prosecution and remanded in police custody for further probe. Legal action is being taken against their countryman.                                                The Peninsula
