Colombo: The Ministry of External Affairs has alerted Sri Lankan missions overseas against a “sinister move by LTTE sympathisers,” a newspaper reported yesterday.
The state-run Sunday Observer said LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) supporters were planning to use images of rebel atrocities and label them as crimes committed by government forces, in their worldwide protests to sully Sri Lanka’s image in the eyes of the world.
A spokesperson for the ministry told the newspaper that the conspiracy came to light when the Indian news channel NDTV telecast images of a Chennai based protest on March 21 where the protesters had displayed images of a grieving father carrying a dead child in his hands, a picture that had been taken after the LTTE’s bomb attack on a civilian bus in Kebithigollewa in June 2006.
The ministry through the Sri Lankan mission in New Delhi has lodged a protest with the NDTV for the footage carrying the misleading image, the report added.
