Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary-General Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari
Praising Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF) for holding the FIG Artistic World Cup for 10th successive year, Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari said the sport’s body will also host the next year’s World Championships in a befitting manner.
Qatar will become the first country in the Middle East to host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships which will be held from October 25 to November 3, 2018 in Doha.
Al Kuwari, who presented medals to gymnasts during the finals of the ongoing FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup, said Qatar will host one of the best editions of the world championships.
“The 2018 World Championships will be a proud moment for Qatar and we are ready to host the event successfully,” Al Kuwari told reporters at Aspire Dome yesterday.
“The QGF has been hosting the FIG World Cup successfully since a long time. We have been hosting top-notch gymnasts and we have the experience to host even bigger competitions.”
“Not just for Qatar, the World Championships will be an honour for the region,” he added.
Speaking about the ongoing event, Al Kuwari said the competition is getting better after every edition.
“The gymnasts from around the world are taking part in the event and spectators have come out in very good numbers. The atmosphere is great in the finals,” said the QOC Secretary-General before giving thumbs up to the progress of sport in the country.
“I think gymnastics is growing in Qatar and QGF is making good effort for its promotion.”
To a query, Al Kuwari shrugged off the impression that Qatar was only promoting football.
“Football is the top sport in the world not just Qatar. It’s a fact but QOC is not only supporting football. We are giving preference to athletes and federations of other sports also and Qatar has been hosting major events in those disciplines too.”
