Scene from Secrets and Lies
DOHA: Secrets & Lies, the winner of Cannes Palme d’Or (Golden Palm — the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival) will be screened tonight as part of the DFI UK Cinema Showcase which brings the best of British Cinema to Doha audiences.
The screening of the Mike Leigh film will be held at 7pm at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Auditorium to be followed by another show on Friday, 4pm at the same venue.
Ken Loach’s double BAFTA-award-winning film, Kes is also scheduled to be screened tomorrow and Saturday for this month’s showcase.
Secrets & Lies features a tour-de-force performance by Brenda Blethyn (winner of Best Actress awards at BAFTA, Golden Globe and Cannes).
It tells the story of the reunion of a mother and the daughter she gave up at birth. Revelations and new beginnings abound in this moving celebration of the power and strength of blood ties.
The British Film Institute included the film in its list of the top 100 all time British films.
Kes is the poignant coming-of-age portrait of 15-year-old Billy, a miner’s son, and the close bond he develops with a wild kestrel that allows him to escape the spiritual bonds of a dead-end life in bleak Northern England.
Ken Loach uses non-professional actors and real locations, bringing the British angry young man film to a new level of authenticity. The British Film Institute named ‘Kes’ one of the top 10 British films of the 20th century in 1999.
DFI UK Cinema Showcase will return on May 30 and 31 with Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block, and three of Nick Park’s very popular Wallace & Gromit short films (The Wrong Trousers; A Close Shave; A Matter of Loaf and Death) will be screened on May 31 and June 1.
Tickets are now on sale at www.dohafilminstitute.com and from the DFI Ticket Outlet at the MIA (check the website for opening hours and location).
Tickets are priced at QR35 for the general public and QR25 for students.
DFI UK Cinema Showcase launched in February, in partnership with the British Council and the Qatar Museums Authority, to celebrate Qatar UK 2013 and will run monthly until Fall 2013.
