DOHA: In the fifth round of Qatar National Road Racing Championship (QNRRC) yesterday, Ahmad Ghaith Al Kuwari powered his way to pole position under floodlights at the iconic Losail International Circuit.
Earlier, the Qatari driver Mohamed Nasser Al Aseiri, behind the wheel of his Porsche GT3, was the fastest driver in the first free practice with a lap time of 2.23.345 in the Open Class.
The second best time was registered by Pavel Nedobity from the Czech Republic with a time of 2.23.675 (Lotus).
In the Production Class yesterday, David Andrew Walker produced the best time with his Honda car, 2.36.107.
In the Qualifying Practice, Al Kuwari clocked the top time of 2.22.354 in his Mitsubishi and will start the race from the front grid.
Next to the Qatari driver will be Mohammed Nasser Al Aseiri who registered a lap time of 2.22.648.
In the Production Class, the best time was secured by David Walker of Great Britain.
“It was wonderful today. I thought the weather will affect the track because of the dust, but it was okay,” Al Kuwari said.
“I didn’t expect a good track as normally we drive after the bikes but the line seemed fine,” he added.
“I did what we had to do. I pushed the car to the maximum. We did the first qualifying of the season and I will try to keep the first place in race also,” the Qatari added.
Al Aseiri, who finished second fastest, was delighted with his performance.
“I am very happy with my time today and I am sure that the competition in the race will be very tough as the front cars are very close with the timings,” Al Aseiri said.
Abdulaziz Abdulla, who emerged as the fourth fastest, said: “The race tomorrow will be a tough race as the qualifying times show that nobody dominated the qualifying sessions. I have to do some alignment in my car and I hope to be better tomorrow.”
Walker, who grabbed the top spot in the Production Class, was delighted that his vehicle had said goodbye to ‘troubled times’.
“I feel great today as I had so many car troubles in the last few weeks,” Walker said after last night’s qualifying.
“Now the car is running beautifully and I feel very confident for the race tomorrow,” he added.
