Doha: An online weekly survey by Al Sharq shows the majority of people feel local municipalities need to boost efforts to deal with abandoned vehicles in their areas.
Asked about effectiveness of efforts of municipalities to keep their areas clean, 60 percent of respondents said they were satisfied by level of cleanliness, 33 percent said were not good, while seven percent did not comment.
Some 56 percent of respondents said they were also satisfied with the work of cleaners, while 38 percent said they were not very active or regular in their visits. On the issue of abandoned vehicles and waste in open areas, 68 percent said municipalities were not doing enough, while 26 percent said they were satisfied. The majority of officials interviewed, meanwhile, said efforts to keep the country clean were good.
Ahmed Al Kuwari, Central Municipal Council (CMC) member, said workers were doing their best as they collect garbage more than once in a day. “They work day and night. But views on this issue can vary from one person to another. Generally, we feel our streets are very clean.”
Ahmed Al Sheeb, also a member of CMC, said cleaning is not the responsibility of municipalities alone. “Nationals and expatriates should be aware that this is for their benefit. Abandoning cars is uncivilised behaviour,” he said, calling for a better mechanism to stop such violations.
