DOHA: Katara’s Facebook page has recorded more than 150,000 followers as Katara steps up efforts to reach out to various audiences through social media.
While its Twitter account has witnessed 33,700 followers, its recently created Instagram account has now more than 3,400 followers. Seventeen Katara video clips have been viewed more than 142,000 in YouTube and the number of visitors to the Katara website exceeds 100,000 visitors per month.
“Katara gives great importance to electronic media for its strong impact. Real power belongs to those who control information whether through production or promotion; for this reason Katara as a cultural institution decided to reach the public through various social networking platforms, in addition to a continuously updated website,” said Katara General Manager, Dr Khalid Al Sulaiti.
Stressing Katara’s support for the development of digital Arabic content, Dr Sulaiti said, “Due to our belief on the importance of an active Arab presence on digital content production, we support the Arab presence on the Web. It is unfortunate to know that it does not exceed one percent of the total electronic content, which does not match the increasing Arab population and not commensurate with the significant heritage of the Arab world,” he said.
“Within this framework, we encourage local and regional efforts which deal with the development of Arabic digital content. We supported, for example, the Digital Content Conference held in Jordan last year, and we are constantly working to support any Qatari or Arabic initiative for the progress of the Arab content on the Web. “
Dr Sulaiti continued: “We believe in the need to strike a balance between the culture of power and the power of culture. It is not limited to financial support or the use of the latest means of communication and technology, but the formation of a strong cultural knowledge to locate itself amid changes we witness today and eventually succeed in raising the bar of excellence.”
