DOHA: Prices of some fruits and vegetables have increased by 30 percent in the Central Market due to short supplies.

A box of tomatoes (5kg) costs between QR35 and QR55, while a box of oranges (15kg) or of bananas (13kg)  are  available at about QR70, Al Raya reported yesterday.

Similarly, a box of kosa (about 5kg) is being sold at QR30, cucumbers (QR15) carrots (QR15), fresh beans (QR35), sweet chillies (QR40) and pomegranates (QR35). Grapes are available at QR23 a kg, pears (QR18); peaches (QR26); figs (QR18), while 500gram of  apricots costs QR10.

Citizens expressed anger and said the hike in prices of fruits and vegetable in the central market was unjustified and blamed some traders.

“Some greedy traders increase the prices of fruits and vegetables on occasions like Ramadan and Eid to make huge profits,” said a citizen.

He said the prices of some fruits and vegetables had also increased by 30 percent due to low production and heatwave in exporting countries.

He alleged that several traders were keeping large stocks to increase prices and make more profits.
