Bangkok: Thai authorities announced the imposition of martial law in eight border districts shared with Cambodia, as clashes between the two sides continued for the second consecutive day.

Commander of the Army’s Border Defense Command in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces General Apichart Sapprasert stated that martial law is now in effect across seven districts in Chanthaburi province and one district in Trat province.

The two countries have long been embroiled in a protracted border dispute stretching over 817 kilometers, with repeated incidents arising from disagreements on poorly defined border points.

On May 28, a limited clash erupted following allegations of a border agreement violation, prompting both sides’ armed forces to reach a temporary de-escalation agreement.

At the time, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that his country had formally submitted a request to the International Court of Justice to address the border disputes with Thailand, in an effort to resolve the crisis through international legal channels.
