Lucknow: A man was shot at in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah town for not putting onions in an egg omelette, police said yesterday. The incident took place in the Aliganj area in Etah, 265km from here. Pujari, who the police described as a criminal, ordered an omelette for four of his friends. When they found there were no onions in it, the group became furious. Egg vendor Deepu Kashyap told them he could not not afford to buy onions, which have become expensive over the past few weeks. Pujari then whipped out a pistol and shot at the vendor. The victim was rushed to hospital.
Six Indians killed in Kenya attack
Ahmedabad: At least three people hailing from Gujarat’s Saurashtra region were killed in the terror attack at a mall in the Kenyan capital, an official said. Rajkot Mayor Raxaben Boliya said that Malti and Jyoti Vaya, who are sisters-in-law, from Rajkot were killed when terrorists stormed Westgate mall in Nairobi. “We are deeply saddened...,” she said. Boliya also said that 16-year-old Neha, granddaughter of N Mashroo, who hails from Jamnagar was also killed. Sridhar Natarajan, 40, from Tamil Nadu, and Paramshu Jain, eight, the son of a Bank of Baroda’s Nairobi branch manager, were initially identified as those killed. Yesterday, Sudharshan B Nagaraj from Bangalore was identified as among the dead.
President approves Waqf amendment bill
New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee has approved the Waqf Amen-dment Bill, 2013, thus making it a law, said a statement yesterday. Parliament had on September 5 approved the Waqf Amendment Bill that aims to make properties under the Waqf Board more commercially viable. According to the bill, the government would maintain the record of Waqf properties and would extend their lease period to a maximum of 30 years. As per data, there are around four lakh registered Waqf properties across the country. If these are developed, more income can be generated, the government said. The bill also aims to strengthen Waqf institutions and streamline their functioning.
Trinamool wave in Bengal civic polls
Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress won eight of the 12 West Bengal civic bodies that went to the polls last week. TMC retained control over three civic bodies — Diamond Harbour (South 24 Parganas district), Habra (North 24 Parganas) and Guskara (Burdwan). The party snatched four civic bodies from the Left Front — Panihati (North 24 Parganas), Chakdah (Nadia), Balurghat (South Dinajpur) and Burdwan — and one Dubrajpur (Birbhum) from the Congress. IANS
