Kids get taste of media with NU-Q at DTFF

DOHA: Northwestern University-Qatar (NU-Q) at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) engaged many children to give them an experience in media.

Complete with lights, a green screen, on-site editing suite, and directors and technical staff from the NU-Q student body, the live studio allowed children aged eight and above to experience the roles of field reporter, field producer, anchor and weatherman.

“Engaging the local community and fostering media literacy are important parts of our mission at NU-Q,” said Everette E Dennis, Dean and CEO of NU-Q. 

“In this project at DTFF’s Family Days, we wanted to give young people and their parents a chance to have fun while also learning something about how a news broadcast gets made,” Dennis said.

NU-Q’s involvement at DTFF’s Family Day activities comes at the end of a slew of events born from a partnership between NU-Q and the Doha Film Institute on this year’s DTFF programmes to support local story telling and the development of the media industry in Qatar, including co-hosting the opening night of DTFF’s Made in Qatar series.

“I was very shy before this but now I think I want to study at Northwestern and be a field producer when I grow up,” said Chayane Rbeiz, 11, who participated in the live news cast.

Students from NU-Q  also had the chance to ‘run the show’ with support from university faculty.
