Doha: Tokyo-based ITOCHU Corporation has tied up with Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development to invest $7.5m over five years in Hamad bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) education programmes.

“It is a great honour for ITOCHU to cooperate with the State of Qatar in the development of a new generation of leaders,” Masahiro Okafuji, President and CEO ITOCHU Corporation, said.

“We sincerely believe that our contribution to this programme will deliver further prosperity for the state and strengthen bonds between the citizens of Qatar and Japan,” he added.

“We very much welcome the support of ITOCHU Corporation which will help individual students from around the world. I am pleased that ITOCHU, which is a partner in Qatar’s oil and gas industry, is now also a partner in our journey towards becoming a knowledge-based society and setting a good example for corporate responsibility toward seducation,” Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, PhD., President of HBKU and Chairman of WISE, said.

ITOCHU’s contribution demonstrates its long-term commitment to Qatar’s higher education initiatives, and that it is committed to providing students with the financial resources necessary to obtain an education that will enable them to serve as the leaders of tomorrow.

“ITOCHU has been a great admirer of Qatar and its people for our good past experiences working together,” said Yoichi Kobayashi, Executive Vice President of ITOCHU. “Today marks another milestone, having entered into a new stage of cooperation, and it is our honour to be part of this wonderful occasion.”

The signing ceremony took place in Doha during the World Innovation Summit for Education, an international platform that encourages the sharing of innovative ideas and best practices in education amongst industry, academia, international organisations, the voluntary and public sectors, and the media.
