DOHA: The annual Arab postal committee meeting commenced in Doha yesterday to discuss issues related to the postal service of this region.
The two-day meeting being held at the St. Reggi’s Hotel is a follow up meeting to the recently held International Postal Union meeting and will discuss about several events postponed due to the political developments and unrest in Arab countries.
The 25th Arab postal committee meeting too was earlier scheduled to be held in Cairo and was changed to Doha, due to the prevailing situation in Egypt.
Mohamed Sali bin Thahir Bintn, Saudi Arabian Minister for Telecommunication and Abdul Rahman Ali, Chairman, Q Post were among the delegations represented 12 countries in the region. The budget allocated for Arabic translations by the Arab postal committee for International Postal Council is one among main issues to be discussed at this meeting.
Since the money has not been utilized for a longer period of time, Arab postal committee has taken steps to recall the budget, allocated for translations.
The meeting will also discuss about issuing the next unified postal stamp for the Arab countries. In January 2008 Arab telecommunications ministers decided to have a common postal stamp for all Arab countries and to be issued every three years.
First stamp was issued in 2008 next should have been in 2011, but due to the Arab Spring it has been delayed. A design submitted by Oman has been accepted to be published and the date of issue will be decided during the meeting. Also the venue for the third Arab Postal Stamp exhibition will be decided.
