MANILA: An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who was among the undocumented Filipinos camping out near the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah was found dead.
Sources said yesterday the 60-year-old water tank operator had a chronic illness but exhaustion may have worsened his condition.
The OFW was found inside a room at the consulate where he was allowed shelter because of his health problem.
Myanmar mine protest quelled
YANGON: A protest by villagers evicted from land near a Chinese-backed mine was violently quelled by police yesterday, activists said, in an echo of a crackdown at the flashpoint site last year.
Farmers attempting to plough land seized to make way for the mine clashed with police protecting the site, according to Ba Htoo, an environmental activist speaking from the scene in Monywa, central Myanmar. One villager was shot and more than two dozen others hurt by police batons, he said.
Tibetan monks self-immolate
BEIJING: Two Tibetan monks in southwestern China died after setting themselves on fire, a media outlet and a rights group said, the latest in a series of such protests against Beijing’s rule.
Lobsang Dawa and Konchog Woeser set themselves ablaze on Wednesday in Sichuan province’s Aba prefecture, where many such incidents have occurred, said US-based Radio Free Asia and Britain-based rights group Free Tibet.
Thai censors drop ban on film
BANGKOK: Thai censors will allow a documentary about a border row with Cambodia to be screened, a culture ministry official said yesterday, in a U-turn after banning the film as a threat to national security.
Censors watched Boundary, which explores the lives of people caught up in conflict in the area near the Preah Vihear temple, twice on Thursday and decided the initial call to ban it was “a mistake”.
Man rescued five days after quake
BEIJING: A 78-year-old man has been rescued five days after an earthquake hit southwestern China, killing 196 and making thousands homeless. He was found by rescuers “on a hilltop” in Muping township, in Baoxing County, Xinhua said, without giving further details.
