Doha: Twenty-one Indian students from Qatar have been awarded scholarships by the Indian government under the Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children scheme for higher studies.

All the students have secured admission to various institutes for their further studies. In total 150 scholarships were awarded to children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

The 21 students from Qatar, who received scholarships, have secured admission to prestigious Indian universities including IITs and NITs.

“Glad to announce that 21 Indian students from Qatar, who ve secured admission in various institutions of higher learning in India, have been awarded scholarship under “Scholar Programme for Diaspora Children”.  List at: https://spdcindia.gov.in,” Indian Embassy in Qatar tweeted.

Most of the students in the full list are from the Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain and Oman. A few are from different African countries.

Government of India had launched a scheme called "Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children" (SPDC), in the academic year 2006-2007, for the wards of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to assist them in pursuing Under Graduate courses in Indian Universities/Institutes.

Under SPDC scheme financial assistance for specific undergraduate courses in Professional and Non-Professional courses (except Medical and related courses) is provided towards tuition fee, admission fee and post admission services. The scheme is applicable to NRIs and PIOs from 66 countries.
