DOHA: Ooredoo is supporting a wide variety of environmental events related to World Environment Day, which falls on June 5, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR)programme.

This year’s theme, ‘Think.Eat.Save,’ focuses on  avoiding food wastage and food loss encouraging people to reduce their food footprint.

In Qatar, World Environment Day has been celebrated since 2007. This year’s events are co-sponsored by the Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC) and the International Academy for Intercultural Development (IAID), and held under the auspices of Dr Saif Ali Al Hajari, Chairman, FEC.

World Environment Day activities kicked off on May 17 with the Eco-Fashion Design Contest Presentation at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Participants chosen from more than 175 entries and 500 participants showcased innovative designs of turning recyclable materials into fashion.

The following weekend, FEC hosted a Painting Contest, with an expected 2,500 participants from more than 80 schools, along with a seminar on sustainable consumption by a nutritionist from IAID.

The celebrations will close on  June 7 with exciting activities including an art exhibit, fashion show, awards presentation, speeches and performances at the Al Rayyan Theatre in Souq Waqif.

Through its CSR programme, Ooredoo supports a wide variety of environmental initiatives. Among these, Ooredoo has pioneered electronic waste recycling, and recently joined major companies around the world in marking Earth Hour.

The FEC is a non-profit organisation that seeks to enrich the concept of environmental conservation and community education. In line with Qatar National Vision 2030, the organisation is committed to making a difference in the environment and to mobilising youth to do their part for the planet.

IAID is a leading academy for performing arts in Qatar, and promotes environmental awareness through the medium of Arts.

Since 1972, World Environment Day has been an annual event organised by the United Nations Environment Programme.
