Education Ministry provides 655 scholarships for university studies

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has provided scholarships to 655 students to pursue their higher studies in the universities operating inside Qatar and abroad. As much as 3,021 students applied for scholarships for the academic year 2021-22.

“So far, 655 students received scholarships. They signed the contracts and started their study,” said Director of Admissions and Registration of Scholarships Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Saleh Muhammad Al Muftah.

Speaking in a Qatar TV programme, he said that a large number of applications seeking scholarships are still under process indicating that the list of scholarships will go longer. “As much as 501 students received scholarships for studying inside the country and 154 students have been given Amiri scholarships,” said Al Muftah.

The Amiri Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship awarded by the government to students who gain acceptance to the world’s most elite universities, including Harvard, Yale, Oxford, University of Melbourne, and McGill University.

He said that the scholarship inside Qatar covers all level including diplomas, bachelors, masters and doctors degrees in different specilaisations.

“Since the opening of registration for scholarship programme on May 20 until September 15, 2021, a total of 3,021 students applied,” said Al Muftah.

The government provides Qatari students with scholarships to pursue their desired field of study in Qatar and abroad after high school. In order to ensure the highest quality standards and educational outcomes, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education compiles a list of colleges and universities abroad that are eligible for Qatari scholarships.

“As much as 3,200 universities are available in the list of the Ministry. We have two lists – scholarship list includes 900 universities; about 600 universities for bachelor degree courses and about 300 universities for higher studies,” said Al Muftah.

Students wishing to study at their own expense must obtain a pre-approval to ensure their university of choice is approved by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. 

“We have another list of universities which requires prior-approval by the Ministry for students who want to pursue their studies at their own expense or sent by some entities. This list includes 1,400 universities,” said Al Muftah. 

He said a larger number of universities of all levels are available under the scholarships providing many options to students to choose as per their capabilities and convenience.

Speaking about the specialisations under the scholarships, Al Fuftah said: “Now we are providing scholarships for study in abroad in three specialisations – Medicine and Associate Medical Sciences; IT and Education.” 

However, he said, if a student applies to study for other specialisations such as law, international affairs or media, we give scholarship for these coureses under certain conditions such as the candidate should obtain 85% mark.
