New York: The United Nations warned that restrictions on oil supplies to Cuba are deepening the country's humanitarian crisis.

UN Resident Coordinator, Francisco Pichon said the situation is no longer a temporary shortage but a full-scale energy crisis driving rising humanitarian risks, disrupting essential services and worsening daily life.

Cuba relies on fossil fuels for about 90% of its electricity and faces a supply deficit exceeding 30%, he added.

In January, the United States tightened restrictions on energy supplies to the island, citing national security concerns.

Washington has since eased its stance, allowing Venezuelan oil sales to Cuba to help mitigate acute fuel shortages.
