Doha: More than 5,000 students have been admitted to various programmes at Qatar University for the coming academic year.

The university has also appointed 200 new teachers in view of the increasing number of students and new programmes, an Arabic daily reported yesterday. There has been a steady increase in the number of students at the university every year, and the 5,000 have been admitted in some 63 specialisations.

The university will conduct orientation programmes for the new teaching staff members from August 19 to 27. They will be introduced to the administrative structure, academic programmes and facilities.

Fatima Al Saeedi from the Employment and Human Resource Department said that the orientation aimed to welcome new teachers and give them necessary guidance.

She said the university is always keen to employ qualified international teaching staff members in addition to local staff, and the orientation sessions will prepare them for the coming academic year. The new teaching staff members are of Arab and many other nationalities.

“The university has a system in place under which scholarships are given to Qataris for Master’s and PhD programmes,” Al Saeedi said.

More than 76 students have been sent to international universities for Master’s and PhD programmes. “We expect them to join Qatar University after they finish their education,” she said. Al Saeedi said that the university also provides local teaching staff with research opportunities.

“We try to provide facilities for our staff members to conduct academic research which helps them in their fields and increases their chances of promotion.”

Al Saeedi said that the department is working to maintain its standard of education, while responding to high demand from students. “We always strive to improve the quality of education at Qatar University.” The Peninsula
