DOHA: Qatari artists Jameela Al Shraim and Abdulrahman Al Dorani are participating in a group exhibition ‘North’ in Venice, Italy.
The exhibition celebrating Arab art features 18 artists from nine countries, including Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, Bahrain, Palestine and Qatar.
Al Shraim and Al Dorani are displaying two of their recent paintings at the expo which marks the launch of the Center for Mediterranean Studies in Culture and Contemporary Art.
Both say they are happy and proud to represent Qatar at the international expo as they depict Qatari art and culture landscape through their work, reflecting progress of fine art movement in the country from local to global level.
Known for her equine artworks, Al Shraim is showcasing her paintings ‘Advancing towards victory’ and ‘Here is my secret’.
She said many of her paintings focus on purebred Arabian horses because for her horses represent love, beauty, art, freedom, peace and journey and relate to Arab culture.
With a degree in art education from Qatar University, Al Shraim is one of the pioneering female artists in the country. She is included in the book, Ten Qatari Female Pioneer Artists, published in 2008 and has been a member of Qatar Fine Arts Society since 1985.
Al Dorani is an electrical engineer by trade and fine art is his hobby. He started creating artworks at an early age.
Palestinian artist Reema Al Mezian has been selected to be the coordinator of Arab artists participating in the expo which features other activities, including symposiums.
Speakers and participants stressed the importance of art and cultural events in bringing people together from Mediterranean and Arab countries.
It is a significant step for Arab art which has created a platform for artists to share experiences.
