DOHA: Internet penetration in Qatar has risen significantly in Qatar in the past few years. Total number of Internet subscriptions (fixed and wireless) has doubled between 2011 to 2014.
The growth in Internet subscription was around 102 percent during the four years as subscriptions grew from 1.4 million in 2011 to 2.9 million in 2014.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ictQatar) data, the growth in Internet subscriptions has been steady during the past few years. Internet subscription grew around 36 percent to 2.9 million in 2014 compared to 2.1 million in 2013.
The growth in subscription was about 28 percent in previous year. Total subscriptions jumped from 1.6 million in 2012 to 2.1 million in 2013. In 2012, the growth was around 16 percent. Total subscriptions grew from 1.4 million 2011 to 1.6 million in 2012.
Customers in Qatar are using Internet through their mobile phone connections and through fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections. Growth in the Internet subscriptions is driven by rise in population and steps taken by Ooredoo to expand fibre network. Ooredoo has invested over $1bn in the past few years in creating fibre network and fixed and mobile connectivity across Qatar which has enabled the company to launch latest products and services in the country.
Ooredoo’s fibre network is available across Qatar, with more than 2,60,000 homes and businesses currently benefiting from super-fast Internet and next generation services. Since its launch in 2011, the fibre network has transformed the broadband Internet market and the digital entertainment industry in Qatar. Users are now benefitting from high speed Internet speed which has enabled quick download of heavy files.
With a 300 Mbps speed, customers can download a two-hour, standard-definition movie (1.5 gigabytes) in less than 40 seconds and a two-hour, high-definition movie (5 GB) in 2.2 minutes.
Going forward, internet subscriptions in Qatar are set to rise because of expected rise in the population and further expansion of fibre network by Ooredoo. According to the experts high speed internet will encourage users to get connected to internet to avail latest services.
