ISLAMABAD: A British Pakistani has become the youngest ever Pakistani mayor in Britain after being elected as Mayor for the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

Councillor Nadeem Ali, who is aged 30, is the youngest ever Pakistani origin mayor who will remain in his position for a year. Congleton’s George Hayes, 21, is Britain’s youngest mayor but Nadeem Ali has the distinction as he was the youngest ever Deputy Mayor of the same Borough and was elected straight to the position of Mayor.

His parents originate from Andrah in Pakistan.

7.5pc rise in salaries likely

ISLAMABAD: The incoming federal government of Pakistan is likely to propose a salary increase of 7.5 percent for employees and a higher relief for pensioners in the next budget of the year 2013-14.

A senior government official said that because of the tight fiscal position, the finance ministry would recommend five to seven per cent salary increase in view of six per cent inflation. If government decided to be more generous, he said, it might increase the salaries by up to 10 percent.

He said that one percent salary increase would translate into Rs2bn per year while 7.5 percent increase would have an annual fiscal impact of Rs15bn and 10 percent increase would take it to Rs20bn.

Bomb claims five policemen

Peshawar: Pakistani police said a roadside bombing had killed five police officers in the country’s northwest.

Senior police officer Abdullah Khan said the attack targeted the vehicle of Khan Bahadur, Deputy Superintendent of Police, killing him. It took place near the village of Periani in the Shangla district.

Khan said the remote-controlled detonation of the bomb planted in the mountainous terrain destroyed the vehicle and killed four other officers. They were returning from the funeral of a fellow officer killed in an ambush a day earlier.

No one has claimed responsibility, but Islamic extremist militants operating in Pakistan’s northwest are suspected.

They have claimed many recent attacks on security troops and police.
