PARIS: Reigning French champions Paris Saint-Germain have been dealt a new defensive blow after Alex was ruled out of their weekend match against Toulouse at the Parc des Princes.
The Brazilian centre-back has not recovered from a thigh injury that forced him off at half-time in the 1-0 win at Valenciennes on Wednesday but PSG coach Laurent Blanc hopes he will be available again for the Champions League clash with Benfica next midweek.
“Tomorrow (today), he will be absent as a precaution so that we will have him back against Benfica,” Blanc said at an eve-of-game press conference.
Alex’s absence is added to that of his compatriot, and PSG captain, Thiago Silva, who admitted that he could be out for six weeks after suffering a thigh injury of his own in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Monaco.
As a result, Blanc is likely to select Brazilian youngster Marquinhos alongside the veteran Zoumana Camara against Toulouse.
“We are a bit short at the back,” explained Blanc. AFP
