New York: The Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah has called on the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution protecting the unarmed Syrian people against the brutal massacre the current regime has been perpetrating.
Al Attiyah stressed that the Security Council resolution should tell the Syrian regime to refrain from using warplanes against its people and enforce the regime to open safe corridors for relief and that such a resolution should be included in Chapter VII.
Addressing a ministerial meeting of ‘The Group of Friends of the Syrian People’, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Dr Al Attiyah called to bring about a final solution to achieve the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom and dignity and the transfer of power according to their will.
He also stressed the need to hand over the perpetrators of the crimes of using chemical weapons and other brutal massacres to international justice.
Dr Al Attiyah made it clear that despite Qatar’s support to the agreement on Syria’s chemical weapons, the deal does not live up to the hopes of the Syrian people who made all kinds of sacrifices, including blood and properties over the past two-and-a-half years.
He said that such a meeting is being held amid crucial and difficult circumstances the brotherly Syrian people are passing through.
Dr Al Attiyah cautioned of the outcome of the deteriorating situation in Syria, with the number of victims reaching to more than 100,000 and millions of displaced persons, the refugees, the destruction of property and the use by the Syrian regime of chemical weapons the matter which has put the credibility of the international community and international legitimacy at stake.
This agreement can not be a substitute for finding a final solution to help the Syrian people achieve their legitimate aspirations for freedom, dignity and the transfer of power according to their will, he said.
“It is not acceptable that this agreement is impeding and obstructing taking the perpetrators of the crimes of using chemical weapons and other barbaric atrocities to international criminal justice.
“We are all aware of the size of the mammoth responsibilities and the huge challenges facing the Syrian opposition and we also realise the human tragedy experienced by the people of Syria, including the displaced people and refugees, the matter which made it imperative for the international community to provide all kinds of assistance necessary to stop the bloodshed and eliminate suffering of the Syrian people at home and abroad and achieve their legitimate aspirations,” the foreign minister said.
