CHICAGO: Non-profit US news organisation ProPublica and media outlets from Canada, France and Norway were among those sharing the honours on Saturday at the 2014 Online Journalism Awards.
ProPublica, which was launched six years ago to conduct investigative journalism, picked up five awards at the Online News Association’s annual conference in Chicago.
The ONA, which administers the prizes, also announced that there would be a new award next year to honor James Foley, the American journalist murdered by the Islamic State group in Syria last month.
The Los Angeles Times was honoured for general excellence in online journalism by a large media outlet but most of the awards this year went to relative newcomers such as ProPublica.
ProPublica was honoured for general excellence by a medium-sized media organization and it won individual awards for its coverage of health care in the United States, drug safety and continuing segregation in US schools.
