DOHA: Action on Diabetes has announced the launch of the accredited Diabetes Education programme, developed in partnership with College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), in the next phase of its campaign to develop expertise in diabetes in Qatar.
The Fundamentals of Diabetic Education programme, based on education modules according to the guidelines of International Diabetes Federation, will provide educators with skills and knowledge required to specialise in diabetes education.
On completion of the six-month course, graduates will have a foundation in diabetes care management and be able to apply skills and abilities to practise safely and effectively. They will also be able to plan, deliver, and evaluate patient education on the condition.
Herluf Nis Thomsen, Programme Manager, Action on Diabetes, said, “Action on Diabetes has launched initiatives to help tackle diabetes, from training programmes and mobile clinics to awareness campaigns to benefit healthcare professionals and the community. In line with this, the Fundamentals of Diabetic Education programme will provide participants with a foundation in diabetes care management and education, enabling them to apply skills to practise safely and effectively in local area.”
The launch highlights Action on Diabetes’ commitment to improve skills and expertise of diabetes educators. Diabetes is one of Qatar’s greatest health challenges and is estimated to affect 16.7 percent of citizens (according to the 2012 Qatar STEPwise report).
The introduction of the programme is part of the strategy being implemented to help health authorities tackle diabetes. New training sessions are part of an awareness programme led by Action on Diabetes to its goal to prevent the condition and limit its spread. The Peninsula
