Kigali: Two civilians and a police officer were killed Tuesday in Burundi as political violence persists, human rights activists and police said.
Unidentified attackers hurled grenades at police in the capital Bujumbura, killing two civilians, said Anschaire Nikoyagize, president of the Burundian League for Human Rights.
A gun battle then followed between police and some of the attackers.
One police officer was killed and three injured, police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.
The violence followed the reported killings of seven people in several incidents on Monday.
Violence erupted in the east African country in April after President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would seek a third term in office despite the constitution setting a two-term limit.
The president then went on to win a July election boycotted by the opposition, dpa reported.
Human rights activists say more than 100 people have been killed in violent protests and attacks related to the election.
