Doha: The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) has announced its new season, with an opening concert on September 4 at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). Maestro Elias Grandy will perform an evening dedicated to the rich and expressive compositions of Robert Schumann.
The programme will begin with the dramatic Genoveva Overture, followed by the Piano Concerto in A minor performed by world-renowned pianist Zee Zee. The orchestra will also present Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C major, a piece distinguished by its emotional depth and triumphant spirit.
On September 11, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will present Spanish Impressions, a vibrant musical story conducted by Maestro Elias Grandy with the QPO in a programme full of rhythm and flair. The concert will begin with Friedrich Gulda’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra, which challenges traditional musical styles. Performed by Hassan Moataz El Mulla of QPO, the concert offers a dazzling blend of classical traditions with jazz, funk, and improvisation.
The orchestra will celebrate the vibrant character of Spain with Manuel de Falla’s ‘Three-Cornered Hat Suites,’ rich with folkloric energy and theatrical drama. The evening will conclude with Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliant ‘Capriccio Espagnol,’ a masterful display of orchestral colors inspired by Spanish melodies and dances. On September 14, the orchestra invites its audience to register for free to attend ‘A Musical Encounter: Sounds of Qatar and Argentina,’ part of Qatar Museums’ Years of Culture in collaboration with Argentina and Chile.
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform a special preview performance in Doha before its upcoming concert at the renowned Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires on September 17. This multicultural programme, conducted by Argentine maestro Enrique Diemecke, celebrates the rich musical exchange between Qatar and Latin America.
On September 27, the Philharmonic will celebrate the bicentenary of the Republic of Uruguay under the baton of Maestro Marcus Bosch and with the participation of soprano Sofia Mara. The orchestra will perform Rodriguez’s ‘La Cumparsita,’ Verdi’s ‘La Forza del Destino,’ Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly,’ Gardel’s ‘Volver Tango,’ and more.
