N'Djamena: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have delivered more than 1.12 million doses of cholera vaccines to Chad’s Ministry of Health, aimed at combating the outbreak that has spread in refugee camps across the eastern provinces of Sila and Ouaddai.
UNICEF reported that Ouaddai region hosts nearly half a million displaced people who fled conflict zones in Sudan, which is currently the most affected country by cholera globally, with over 2,400 deaths recorded last year.
To curb the spread of the disease, Chad’s Ministry of Health announced the launch of a wide-scale vaccination campaign starting in early September, covering five eastern provinces.
Cholera is a contagious disease that causes acute diarrhea and is often transmitted through contaminated food or water.
It can be easily treated by replenishing lost fluids.
