ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has raised objections to four new hydropower projects of 1,716MW capacity to be built by India on western rivers in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.
With this, the total number of violations by India of the 1960 treaty, as claimed by Pakistan, has increased to 10, including Baglihar and Kishanganga, two major cases taken up by Pakistan with the International Court of Arbitration or neutral experts.
The new controversial projects include Ratle Hydroelectric Plant (48MW), Miyar (120MW), Lower Kalnai (48MW) and Pakul Dul (1000MW to be ultimately increased to 1,500MW).
Oil, electricity prices to climb
ISLAMABAD: With an imminent increase of 30 percent in the power tariff for domestic consumers next Tuesday, as committed to the International Monetary Fund, the Pakistan government is also going to further increase the prices of petroleum products by Rs5.77 per litre.
According to top officials at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources here yesterday, the price of petrol (motor gasoline) is likely to be jacked up by a whopping Rs5.45 per litre and HOBC (high octane blending component) by Rs5.77 per litre from October 1, 2013.
