Geneva: Qatar demanded an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Arab territories and the cessation of its racist and aggressive acts.
It also called for lifting of the siege on the Gaza Strip since 2007, stressing the need for immediate cessation of all settlement activities which confirm that Israel is not serious about achieving peace process.
This came in a speech by Jassim Al Maawda, Second Secretary, Qatar’s Mission to UN and other international organisations in Geneva, yesterday during a general debate on ‘The human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories’ as part of the 30th session of Human Rights Council.
Al Maawda stressed the importance of the topic as a key issue on the council’s agenda and the need to participate in discussions to highlight continuing human rights violations by Israel, the occupying power.
He said Israel’s escalation has reached a very dangerous stage. Since its occupation of Palestinian territories, Israel has not ceased to commit heinous crimes, violations and provocative and racist practices against the Palestinian people and the Arab and Islamic nations, he added.
Al Maawda condemned Israeli attacks on Muslims in the occupied Jerusalem and Al Haram Al Sharif, the most recent of which were repeated incursions by Israeli forces and a group of settlers into Al Aqsa Mosque and the flagrant attack on worshipers in its compound.
He stressed that Israel must understand that the Palestinian cause will not be obliterated despite difficulties the region is facing because it is an Islamic and Arab issue rooted in the Arab and Muslim conscience.
He reiterated Qatar’s firm stance on supporting the Palestinian people and their just cause until their rights are restored and their independent state with full sovereignty and its capital in East Jerusalem is established.
