Al Duhail’s Bassam Al-Rawi (centre) celebrates after converting a stoppage-time penalty.
Doha, Qatar: Bassam Al-Rawi converted a stoppage-time penalty as Al Duhail snatched a 2-1 victory over Yemen’s Shaab Hadramout in the Gulf Club Champions League (GCCL) at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium yesterday to maintain their perfect start in Group A.
Yazan Mohamed had put the hosts ahead in the 73rd minute, but Aboud Dahman equalised for the visitors 10 minutes later with a powerful effort from outside the box.
Al Duhail, however, had the final say when Al-Rawi converted from the spot in the fifth minute of added time after Rashid Al-Abdullah was fouled inside the area.
The victory took Al Duhail to six points from two matches, moving them to the top of Group A, while Shaab Hadramout remained without a point.
Al Duhail dominated the opening exchanges and created several chances, with Almoez Ali narrowly missing the target in the eighth minute before Krzysztof Piatek headed over four minutes later.
Almoez had another opportunity in the 24th minute but failed to turn a cross into a goal as the hosts continued to press.
The Qatari side maintained their attacking approach after the break and finally broke the deadlock when Hani converted Sultan Al-Brake’s cross in the 72nd minute.
Shaab Hadramout responded through Dahman, whose long-range effort brought the visitors level in the 83rd minute.
Just when the match appeared set for a draw, Al Duhail earned a penalty following a foul on Al-Abdullah, with Al-Rawi keeping his composure to secure all three points.
