DOHA: Non-Governmental Organisations comprised in the Climate Action Network (CAN) have expressed their disagreement with the designation of Poland as host country for the climate change conference of the parties of 2013.
On this issue, Anja Kollmuss, from Carbon Market Watch, said in a press conference yesterday that Poland is trying to convince the European Union to not raise their emission reduction to 30 percent, rejecting also the closing of a long term climate change strategy.
The representative of Carbon Market Watch added that “the president of this conference about climate should be able to negotiate with the parties, while the Polish Government has demonstrated that is not capable of that”.
“Poland is blocking progress of negotiations in Doha, saying no to stronger regulations for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the only legally binding document we have for this matter”, she said.
Oxfam International’s Tim Gore, said that “despite the economic problems many rich countries are facing, there are options available to them to fund climate action”.
CAN is a worldwide network of over 700 NGOs in more than 90 countries, working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels.

Doha: South Korea’s Ambassador for Climate Change Son sung-Huwan has welcomed Qatar’s hosting of the United Nations 18th Conference on Climate Change (COP18), saying it features a historic turning point in the course of these talks which will pave the way for the start of a new phase of the Kyoto Protocol and the conclusion of talks related to workgroups long-term cooperative action and other specialised committees.
