DOHA: In just two days of COP18 conference, more than 750,000 sheets of paper have been saved thanks to its PaperSmart initiative, the Chairman of its Organising Sub-Committee said yesterday.

Fahad bin Mohammed Al Attiya said there had been about a 96 percent reduction in paper use from previous COPs as a result of PaperSmart, which allows people to manage their own use of paper resources by printing only the documents that they need through an easy-to-use web portal.

Speaking at a daily press briefing at the Qatar National Convention Centre, he said: “Through this amazing technology we have saved more than 750,000 sheets of paper or 90 trees. We should all be proud that we will be saving lots of trees in the days to come.”

Al Attiya said that about 17,600 people were expected to attend COP18/CMP8 and so far 12,500 have arrived in the city. They include 6,000 delegates, 5,700 observers and 800 members of the media.

Looking ahead to the Global Day of Action march, which will take place in Doha on Saturday, Al-Attiya said: “We are proud that this march will be organised by Qatar youths and organisers.”

He also assured that the COP18/CMP8 team has been working hard to resolve some teething problems with the bus schedules. He added that 120 journeys per hour were being made in the morning to QNCC from 36 bus hubs across the city.
